How to save Money while Trousseau shopping?

Getting a complete new wardrobe is a dream for every girl and that's what happens when an Indian girl gets married!
Not only is it a dream come true, your parents don't say 'No' to anything (well...almost anything...within reasons)

So does this topic even belong here, well we should save money where ever we can, right?! ( so we can spend it while shopping on our honeymmon ;P )

So where should you save and where should you splurge?

Main Outfits

1. Wedding Outfit : Splurge!
2. Tilak/Engagement/Reception Outfit : Splurge!
3. Sangeet and Mehendi Outfit : This is the most 'fun' functions of all and your outfit should be equally comfy to accommodate all kinds of dancing (bhangra to salsa), so skip the bling and heavy embroidery,2 have fun and Save!
4. Haldi/Pooja Outfit : Haldi, Save! its going to get dirty anyways. For Pooja pick an Anarkali or Saree out of your other Trousseau outfits and Save!

Trousseau ( Saree, Suits, Western, others)

1. Trousseau 11 Saree's : Most family (read : mom's) would insist on minimum 11 Saree's in your Trousseau. If your not a Saree girl and if you don't have a lot of weddings coming within the family then make sure you don't take more than 5 heavy saree ie Splurge on 5 Saree's, why even 5? Because this would be the only time no one is looking at price tags and eventually one day you will need something that looks like a 'newly wed'.

How do you save on even these 5???
Buy Red or maroons! Nothing says Newly-Wed like a Red Saree so even if its not a heavily embroidered saree it will still give that effect.
Buy Tie-Dye ( Bandani Saree) Even the ones with a light border give a nice effect and can easily look well dressed.

Buy 4 good South Silks : These come in variety of price range and whether its expensive or not they all look equally elegant! Can easily be dressed up or dress down. So from a wedding to a dinner party a single south silk can take you places. Splurge or Save as your budget allows. ( CIB highly recommends Nalli, they have beautiful Silk Saree's in all price range)

'In-fashion' 2 Saree , Only 2?! well you should ideally buy atleast 4 but if we are covering only 11 saree's then this is what I m left with. Here SAVE! fashion changes in a blink of eye. Infact last year before I could make up my mind if I wanted a velvet palla half and half saree they went out of fashion. Plus these are the ones that you can easily buy at any point of time after the wedding. These are the ones that people will be gifting you. So buy the ones you know you'll wear and then pick up the rest as the fashion changes.

2. Suits : So you are a T-shirt Jean girl well don't expect to jump into them in the first month of marriage! Suits are you savior here! and because you would be needing so many of them make sure you Save! Its economical to get fabrics and get them stitched instead of buying ready-made. (although if you know an economical ready-made suit shop, please leave a comment below with details :P)

Splurge on 2 good Anarkali's The days you are too tired to wear a saree or cant figure out the pleats, Anarkali come as a god sent gift. They look dressy and all you have to do is slip them on.

Western
For your wedding wardrobe buy only those that you will need during your honeymoon, the rest can be brought later easily as fashion and weather changes.

Buy a Lot of shorts, Tshirts, tops, tunics, jeans, skirts, dresses, a good mixture of 10 garments.

Pick up pieces from bigger retail shops like Shopper's Stop and Globus, M-block (GK in Delhi) road side guys also have some great pieces, you just need to find the right ones. Go to Export surplus places they generally have good stuff too, just dig deep. Think of it this way, its export surplus so it was anyways going to Zara and H&M's of the world.

So for all western wear Save! as much as you can.

Others

Bags, shoes, artificial earrings Save! Save! Save! Stick to the basics! Golds, silver, black, beigh; stick to colors that will go with atleast 3-4 of your outfits

Other Tips

1. It goes without saying to shop during SALE time!
2. If you know your wedding date before hand then go shopping during off-season, a lot of so-called sales during wedding seasons are actually just inflated rates with a discount tag on.
3. Know what you want to buy before hand and stick to it (this is probably the most difficult to do!)

So whether you Splurge or Save, enjoy Yourself!! After all your getting a Brand new Wardrobe!!

Have fun Trousseau shopping!

I have a little treat for all you Art Lovers out there, Crazy Indian Brides's Bestest friend is out with her art exhibition soon! And her work is beyond extraordinary!
( I never knew she could paint like this! was quite a shock when I first found out! so just had to HAD to put it up for you to see!)

Crazy Indian Wedding Presents :

Noopur Anita Balia

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born and brought up in Ahmedabad. Graduated as a design student of NIFT in 2010 from Mumbai she immediately left for her hometown Ahmedabad where she came across her mother's paintings and the impact of direct contact with abstract art was such that she began to simplify it in my own way. That's when the journey began...

Her exhibition of Contemporary Figurative Paintings   "THE SOUL" shows from the 18th of june, 2013 (Tuesday) till 23rd June, 2013 (Sunday), at 'The Gallery' Amdawad ni gufa, Guj University, Ahmedabad.

Crazy Indian Brides ask's " What is the soul about? Why this name?"

Noopur's says : The soul series was the outcome of the Delhi Gang Rape that happened in December last year and it left me disgusted and terrified. I began to search deeper into what's the inner identity , "the self" that gets affected rather than the outer physical state during any traumatic event.

While the brain has its lead in emotions, intellect, and will, and while people’s physical attributes are an essential part, we must also remember that the person is in itself an ultimate unit of analysis. Thoughts, feelings, actions are ultimately the dimensions of this person. And it is the soul that combines all of these dimensions of the person to form one life.
When it is broken to an extent where its unrepairable, you have to attend to it.

So The soul is, arguably, the most deepest dimension of a person or, as we often say today, as of the “self.” and the pain that is caused on this deep a level is what i wished to express through this series of my paintings.

The later part of the series are a reflection of my own personal experiences. For the past couple of months I rarely left the house. I did not answer the phone and rarely checked my mails. Most of the time was spent trying to answer the questions which had accumulated over the past couple of years.

To me the power of any painting lies in the fact that it was picked up from the real world, that a person's psyche interacted with and interpreted a particular piece of reality at a unique and inspired moment. The transformation that constitutes in a painting is what continues to captivate and inspire me.

As an artist I believe in and love painting. It can forever freeze a mystery, a memory, a moment. I paint everything, from the most seemingly daily details to the significantly interesting stories of our day. Wherever people gather, I come across the most fascinating dramatical performances with a cast of characters unintentionally playing their parts. These stories unfold one after the other ,collectively telling the story of life itself....

Here is a glimpse into her work :

For those of you who are in Ahmadabad or will be traveling there from the 18th to 23rd of June, this exhibition is a MUST visit!!

A Letter to YOU

The blog turns 1 today.

A year back I was a Bride-to-be and I started this blog as a much needed place to put my thoughts.
I was in-between jobs when my marriage got fixed and taking up a new job right before the wedding made no sense, so I decided to take a break and concentrate all my energy into planning the perfect wedding.

I must tell you that I have this nasty habit of researching things to the depth, and like any tech-savvy girl the internet was my library. With 3 months into the wedding planning I had gathered so much information about things-to-do, shopping must haves, skin-care, hair-care, etc. that I needed a place to put it all.

I was continuously commenting on other bridal blogs when I realized if I put all my comments together in one place it would actually help other brides, in fact if I start writing about things I know and things that I have discovered along the way it would help other girls out!

It’s easy to read a review online but you do not know its authentication, you do not know if the person is being paid to be nice and write nice things or if it’s an actual review of a place or a product by a real person, by a REAL bride, I know that gap existed and I wanted to find a way to bridge it.

I tried Pinterest, but I could only capture pictures I liked online, then twitter where defining a wedding preparation in less than 140 characters was next to impossible! And instragram although made all pictures look pretty it didn't really solve the problem….and hence this blog was born…

I started putting words to ideas, the picture folder that I had on my desktop all went online, everything that I followed as a bride-to-be was shared. The shops I visited were listed out, the failed diets, the weight struggle, the blog became like a little friend that I used to tell everything to. It was an outlet for all the Bridezilla energy.

Future plans..

While I try to write as much as I can there is still a lot more things that I have left to tell you, there are shops that I keep discovering, new home made facials, manicures at home, pre-bridal tips, jewelry, makeup tricks, haircare, etc. so the blog post will keep coming.

Plus we keep having new editions to the blog, I have a lot of skin care, style and makeup experts coming in for you. There are also a lot of Brides-to-be willing to share their stories, the Delhi Dating series is coming in, plus recipes for the new Bride.,etc.etc., a lot of Guest writers who want to share their experience with you, so it will be another exciting year at the blog!

I owe you an apology..

A few days ago I was re-reading my old posts and I realized how better I was at writing things a year back, and now I seem to have gone down a notch in the research and content that is put across, I promise to do better.

And Thank you..
I am extremely honored and in gratitude that you continue to stay with me, I cannot express the happiness I get when I log on every day and watch those little numbers going up knowing you’re out there reading the blog (I can see you :P ).

It is this enormous amount of encouragement from you that the blog continues till date. When I get mails or comments from you saying you have been following the blog for a while now, it really makes my day J

Thank you! Thank you for being there! For encouraging me! For being a part of the journey! For being a part of Crazy Indian Wedding!

Esha Deol's little sister Ahana got engaged last week!
(Do we have any other celebrity weddings this year?!)

I love how happy she is!!

They make a cute couple and Ahana looks soo happy :) but the clothes...*confused*.

Like for us 'normal' people we dress up for weddings and special events, do they get so tired of heavy expensive clothes that on their wedding events they just want to be another bride..happy to be with the one she loves.... (?)

What is it with celebrities and dressing down at weddings? (Did kareena start this?! Remember her registered wedding outfit? See here)

Ahana at Esha Deol's wedding

I love this saree and jewelry combo.

Would Ahana go the traditional way like her sister or is she more contemporary?
I personally love traditional brides! Genelia is my favorite so far and then Esha Deol.

I dunno who she is, found her picture in the wedding, Her necklace,*me wants!*

Go back in time and thank someone! Stay Rooted!

As for me : I would like to Thank my parents for who I am and who I have became, and I would like to Thank my Brother for teaching me how to read....(why didn't anyone teach me how to spell though?!)

5 Easy Tips By a MUA for the Bride to be!

$

Bangalore based Rekha Krishnamurthy from 'Studio Mirror Loves Youadvises Brides-to-be....

 1. Drink lots of fluids
Drinking fluids, especially, Water is more of a common sense than a tip. This is one rule each one of us should follow throughout our lives. Water helps flush out toxins and the effects can certainly be seen on one’s skin. There is an unmistakable glow on your face, constantly, when you make drinking atleast 8 glasses of water a practice. Along with water, one can also consume juices of clear fruits and vegetables like Watermelon, Cucumber etc

2. Watch what you eat
Wedding is a once in a lifetime celebration, and one cannot help but get carried away with lot of mouth watering savories around. But, a little bit of discipline would definitely go a long way. So, ensure that you stop consuming Sweets & Deep Fried foods atleast 15 Days before your wedding. The last thing you want is a pimple to pop on your Big Day. Also, if you are a Non – Vegetarian, restrict yourself to grilled delicacies only. (toughest thing to do of all 5! )

3. Eliminate soap and face wash
Soaps and face washes can be convenient to use but often contain ingredients that are harsh on your skin. Hence, the best option is to eliminate them for these few days. When you go for a bath, carry a mixture of Gram Flour and milk. You would do well if you could add a pinch of turmeric to the mixture. Use the paste (which should have a runny consistency) on alternate days or at least 2 times a week while taking a bath and it will effectively clean your skin of impurities, without drying the skin and it also exfoliate the skin. Use it to wash your face twice daily. It is absolutely safe and helps to brighten one’s complexion. ( my MUA also asked me to stop using soap, in the last week I was taking a bath with only malia, sugar and honey )

4. Stress - NOT
This one is truly, easier said than done. As your big day approaches you are certainly going to be worried about a lot of things, like if your trousseau has been altered and brought, if your jewellery is safely packed, your makeup artist is booked, your mehendi artist is confirmed, your Spa appointment is in place etc In short, there would be an endless list of things that may require your attention and cause you a lot of nervous moments, but, a little planning ahead will keep most of the things, if not everything at bay. Stress causes damage to your skin, so ensure that there are not many stressful and anxious moments during the celebrations.

5. Sleep – A LOT
Nothing prepares you better for the big day than a few good nights of beauty sleep. Once the pre-wedding ceremonies begin, it will be followed by the Wedding and post-wedding celebrations leaving you with a lot of short sleep nights. This is definitely going to show up on your skin. So, try not to ignore the importance of getting atleast 7-8 Hours of sleep atleast a week or 10 days prior to your big day.

Follow these simple tips and be the most gorgeous Bride you always dreamed of being. And do not forget to smile a lot!

My Fight with tanning! (using home remedies)

$
0
0
I love sunny days and prefer summers over winters. Somehow I can go out happily at 40 degree's, but no force on earth can get me out of a blanket in winters. Infact my main reasons for not continuing a regular job is because I don't work in winters.

Tanning however, is the worst part of summers! and its the one thing that's been haunting me.

Left to Right :
Haldi day wedding celebrations(Nov. 2012), Shimla right after the wedding(Nov. 2012), South Africa first day(Dec. 2012), South Africa last day (Dec. 2012) , Goa first day(March 2013), Goa last Day(March 2013)
The only thing I am super glad about is that last year I was pretty much the same 'color' so my wedding went off with no drama, but post-marriage its like my skin is playing holi!

South Africa is a wonderful country no doubt and if your planning to visit then do apply sunscreen every hour! ( I am not sure how much truth there is in this fact but someone at a shop in South Africa told us that sunscreen brought from Indian are not effective against the harsh South African sun and its better to just pick up a sunscreen from a local shop there..)

Anyways, here's what I did to remove tanning :

1. Uptan :

This is probably the most used and super effective way of removing tan. This time around however I did feel the tan lighten and almost go away (see Goa first day picture Vs South Africa last day pic) but.....aahhh....

its difficult to explain...ok let me try, I have a golden undertone skin but after coming back from South Africa it was like the skin changed its undertone color and I got tanned from within where as Indian tanning is just the top layer.

So Uptan helped me remove the outer tanning but the inner tanning remained, which can't be really seen in some pictures but in others its like an alien color.....(does that make sense at all?!?)

As for you lovelies, Uptan is really good!

How to make :

Mix together :
1. Besan 1-2 spoons
2. Haldi half teaspoon
3. Lemon half
4. Honey a little
5. Milk to mix
6. Choker 1spoon
7. a little Rose water ( if you have any)

Basically Besan, Haldi and Milk are the most important components the rest if you have them, then add them otherwise those 3 do the job well.

The mixture should look semi-solid.

What to do with it?

Apply it all over your face, neck, hands, legs where ever you want.

Let it dry (til it gets a little hard)

Then you can either wash it off or scrub it off. I personally prefer scrubbing it off.

People generally advice to not use soap after this!

2. Tomato's

Again great for removing tan, but I think it works better if its a recent tan, as in you do this end of the day and the same days tan would go away easily. Using it twice a week, once middle of the week and once on the weekend makes it more effective.

How to make :

Cut a medium size tomato into 2 parts

What to do with it?

Apply it to your face and/or your hands, squeeze it a little to get the juice out directly on your skin

If you find this a little messy you can extract the juice first and then apply it on.

Leave it for 15 min. There might be a slight tingly sensation but that's just the tomato juice working its magic.

Wash it off.

3. Malai Saffron

I am in love with this solution! This is the only homemade tan removal pack that has removed the weird alien skin color (mentioned above). Also the only one which lightened the sleeve tan (tanning on the shoulders which is left  behind because...of the sleeves..(huh?!)..blogging is getting tougher with just words)

How to make :

Take out Malai from the milk

Soak 3-4 strands of Saffron in malai overnight

What to do with it?

Apply it all over your face and hands (avoid on the face if you already have oily skin)

Let it dry for 15 min.

Wash it off by gently rubbing.

I don't use soap when I use this.

Stink Alert! make sure the bathroom is cleaned afterwards, it leaves behind a nasty stink but the skin is super soft and 'chikni'

Well now I am pretty much back to my normal skin tone, my golden undertone is back because of the malai-saffron tan-pack and I am now finally able to look at mirrors again! (does that sound vain?!)

Anyways with summer heat about to leave and wedding season approaching, don't forget to protect your skin! It took me around 4-5 months to get my skin back! Take Care!

Review: Bride and Groom Exhibition

Bride and Groom Exhibition started today and is on till Monday. Should you visit? I would say yes. There are a variety of stalls catering to all style and design need.

I visited today with my MIL and SIL.

The atmosphere hits you the minute you enter Ashok,

Page 3 socialite type ladies all walking in and out, clack-clack-clack of their stilettos.
"Did you know her fiance is ONLY 4'3"
"Are you serious?!"

Mixed with the chappal noise thub-thub-thub of cute full figured mummy's with stick thin daughters in tow.
"Mummieee wo pink wali dress kitni achi thi na!"
" Nahi chee uppar say net tha, pura shoulder dhik raha tha, ladkey waley dhekney aaye gay to kya boley gay"

I am not sure why that uncle stopped to pose...

When you climb up your greeted by a registration desk. Entry is free, you just have to fill in a small contact form and they give you the pass. As you enter the main hall the first thing you hear is "Bhaiya do-chey (2'6) mein dhikao" Babuchuri wala's is the first stall right at the entry-exit gateway. He had the prettiest pink chuda there and a lot of other pretty bangles too, but the price he quoted were above his normal price (All my churi's are from him, so I should know) so until and unless its a churi-emergency skip him, you can get the same stuff at his shops at M-block (high end, fancy churi's) or Lajpat (normal range, good churi's) or Hanuman Mandir (Low range, glass and a bit fancy churi's)

Once you move around its a bit crowded but worth going. My SIL and me have opposite style scene, her's is a bit more punjabi modern outlook on things while mine is a more traditional, and there was enough variety for both of us.

Bride and Groom Exhibition has Indian and Western garments, photographers, Jewelry, heels, wedding cards, etc.

Here are the ones that I like:

Ranas Legacy
For me this one was the best stall of all...it was the one which made me think "ooh I can wear this for the wedding" and then I had to hit my head to remind myself that I was already married :( , no pretty bridal lehenga's for me any more :((

Ranas Legacy was the only one that had a variety of lehenga's on display and the stall was filled with customers and orders.

Based in Jaipur the owner point blank refused to tell me where he supplied in Delhi, he says he isn't allowed to tell the names...which makes you wonder if he supplies to designers or bigger shops. The quality is at par for sure.

Bodhi Tree
Again from Jaipur, I met Siddhi one of the designers young, beutiful and dynamic. After talking to her about Gota work, Zari and Zardozi you could see her excitement when she explained her work.

If your looking for pure traditional looks, or lovely gota lehenga she is the one to go too.

Lehenga's start at 35,000 and Anarkali's at 12,000

Beau Monde
Do visit for glamorous clutches! She doesn't have a facebook page as of yet but will be online soon!

Dar-e-aab
All the way from Kashmir she brings with her luxury wear fit for a princess! Lovely sharara's like they used to wear in Rajwada times and gota's to die for!

Toxic
Based in Kolkata they have no branches and don't share pictures online. Anarkali's, Kurti's, saree and light lehenga are the range that they have at the exhibition.

Naina Jain

For the first time I saw a Saree that was a mix of Gota, Tie and Dye, and chikankari. Beautiful!

The above is a list of names I really really liked. I have a thing for traditional garments but if your looking for something modern and crystal filled its available there as well!

and if your looking for something elegant and classy go to Gaurav Chhabra , although he specializes in Sherwani (yes things for the Groom are there as well!) his women's wear is certainly a class apart. I looked at it and imagined a tall thin girl with a glass of red wine celebrating her engagement with friends and family on a ship deck. So if your that girl then there is something for you too.

So if your getting married or in need of some good clothes and are free either tomorrow(7th July) or on Monday(8th July) do visit Bride and Groom Exhibition happening in Delhi at the Ashok

DIY Universal Saree Blouses!

$

What are universal saree blouses?
Those basic gold, silver and black blouses that everyone's been talking about. They go with most saree's and you dont have to worry about matching blouses.

So where do you get them from?
In Delhi M-Block is full of them! and so is every small little shop around town. Meena Bazaar and Greenways have the prettier embroidered ones.

Why the DIY?
Because
1. They don't fit! they are made in a standard size 36", even if the button closes perfectly there are alterations that are required.

and

2. some have the weirdest hemlines with the center going up

I have never seen anyone wear that on purpose, why do they make them like that?! reminds me of a fish tail...

DIY

What do you need?
A good tailor, fabric and tiny borders (optional)

What Fabric to get?
Brocade is the one thats mostly used in blouses.
You can also use georgette brocades (also called khadi silk).
Raw Silk always gives a nice matt-shine finish, quite elegant looking.
If your a bling person there is quite a lot of sequence in the market these days.

Here are a few pictures of different blouses and I will try de-coding the blouse fabric for you. (For the picture above the Fabric is Artificial Silk.

Brocade blouse with golden gota borders

This is again Brocade, but embroidery has been done on it, so it looks richer.
Since its a tiny piece its difficult to make out but looks like raw silk
I first thought its printed cotton, but if you look at it closely you can see the white booties are woven, this is chanderi.

Sequence.
btw, the market is full of neon sequence these days!

Where can you get the fabric, latkans and laces from?
I prefer Lajpat nagar in Delhi. Its more organised and easily accessible when you want smaller quantities and Kinnari Bazaar at Chandani chowk is ofcourse the hub of it all.

What next?
Once you have got all your stuff, visit your tailor, pick a simple design so that it goes with everything! and give your measurements.

What to keep in mind!
Here matchy is your word! If your making a Golden blouse stick to golden latkans, same for silver. Absolutely no contrast colors on your basic blouses. Otherwise your 'universal' blouse will no longer be universal.

Have fun!
