Have you shopped online? My brother loves flipkart and shops from there but its always little things.

I have brought books and digicam online, but that was after I had seen the actual product in a shop and brought it only because of the discount I was getting.

What troubles me is even if I buy anything online, specially clothes, will they fit?! will it be the exact same product as seen on the screen. I sell my Roli Gaur Vashisht products online at Indianhanger.com and people do buy but I havn't really brought anything online myself.

One of my cousin said she got a lot of her trousseau Saree's and Suits online and they all came out perfect.

I do however love looking at Kalki Fashion, their designs really tempt me.

I love this one! Its like a statement piece on its own, add a pair of earings and you are done.

I want this! So pretty!

And this one too!!

I really want to buy from them but still a little skeptical so I asked them a few questions

What happens when you buy from Kalkifashion online but don't like it when it arrives?

-- We try and talk to the customer why they don’t like the garment. They can return it back but they have to pay for returning the shipment (courier charges).

Can the lehenga be customized? If yes, then what if you want to return the customized lehenga?

--A customized order can’t be returned.

Can we see the all products anywhere in India?

--At our stores in Santacruz and Worli (Mumbai)

Winner of our Bridal Shoot Giveaway : Vrinda Aghi!

Why do you deserve to win? Tell us your Story.

We saw, we met and fell in love. It was a typical arrange marriage set up. Our parents met at a coffee shop. We were given some time to talk. I kept chatting incessantly and he kept gazing at me.

The next day, we met again & the day after too....

Little did we know that a big bomb would be dropped on us soon, my mom who is an ardent astrologer went to a pandit ji, who gave a no for our match. My mom told me the news and I was shocked. She told the parents and we decided to wrap it up.

When I almost thought that it was all over, I saw his strong determination to fight back, he did not take a no for an answer. Our parents then consulted few other astrologers, who gave a go ahead and we were finally rokaoed ;)

I have a got a beautiful set of parents in his parents, a loving sister in law, the most amazing jiju which tag along with a set of nephews who are the love of my life. What more could I ask for?

He is god sent for me! :)

Getting married into the family who owns Roshans she is wearing a lehenga from there and is a true red-green traditional bride (my fav!). She has booked Plum Salon for the D day!

However this Bollywood arranged-love story caught our heart.

Really wish we could have given you all a chance to participate. More pictures coming soon!

Dummy guide to Makeup for the Bride-to-Be

Before I entered college I knew zilch about Makeup. I had put on kajal just a couple of times in 11th resulting in my brother telling me that my eyes have grown mustaches :/

4 years of college taught me basic makeup skills, add another couple of years of working under a designer and I could do full makeup in under 15 min while driving a car. It wasn't until I got engaged that I realized  I just know one way of putting makeup. So I did what any girl does, I YouTubed.

I know a lot of girls who have never ever had makeup on. If you are one of them and are too scared and confused, here are video's that are extremely basic! If you know nothing watch these two videos and your good to go!

1. Be Beautiful : Easy Office Makeup
Although it says Office Makeup the video is great to learn just the basics. Akriti, the beauty blogger at Be Beautiful gives great advice during the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYT3oz0rI38

Infact log on to Youtube and do watch the rest of her videos. I loved the "How to dress up for a party in 10 minute" video. She teaches you how to do a great smoky eye in very easy steps!!

PS : Don't get scared by the many brushes! While your still learning get a basic makeup brush kit and it will probably have everything.

2. If you think the above is still a bit complex, see the video below. Totally Basic!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTHlUzAFXrY

She uses products that are not available in India but the brands are! You can get any BB cream, any compact, any concealer, Maybelline Mascara and Maybelline Baby lips gloss.

Buy Your Basics :

1. BB Cream/Foundation (Start with BB creams so you get use to looking at yourself with a bit of makeup and then upgrade to Foundation for functions)
2. Compact (Must for Oily Skin or if your nose is oily)
3. Concealer (Only if you have uneven skin, if you are happy with your skin then no need, I have never used one)
Eyeliner ( I use Loreal superliner )
4. Kajal ( I use Incolor, in many colors )
5. Mascara ( I use Maybelline Colosal)
6. Basic eye shadow kit (I use Revlon Cream Shadows in 'Not Just Nudes')
7. Lipstick/Lipgloss ( I love Loreal Lipgloss Glam Shine 200 )

Point to remember : Practice, practice, practice! Nothing will improve your makeup skills better than practice!

Let me know if this helped :)

From Store to D-day

Ever wondered if the lehenga you brought would look ok on D-day? Was it a right purchase??

Here are things to do while going shopping for the main function outfits :

1. Put on some makeup.

2. Have your hair neat and tidy, and if you can, then tie it in a way you would want to on the function day.

3. Don't have a distracting nailpaint on. Clean nails or if you already know the color you want then that.

4. If your jewelry is decided then keep that in mind.

5. Once you are doing a trial, step as far away from the mirror and then see yourself.

And remember pictures on your camera phone don't really look the same as the professional pictures.

During trial I had the same jewelry with me in my bag, so could see how the look would be.

I tried this one as a Saree style in the shop as well, but liked it better with the front draped. On the function day however I decided to do Saree style since I was doing front palla on my Mehendi too. Hmmm...although now I think I should have stuck to front drape.

The Second chunni of the Lehenga was made later, but during trial I asked for another red Chunni of some other lehenga just to see how it would look.

This was an impulse buy, it was suppose to be a yellow saree but I feel in love with this golden lehenga Saree.

I was introduced to this shop by my mother-in-law when we went trousseau shopping. We went there again recently to get my Karva chauth Saree (although I am wearing my wedding lehenga on Karva chauth....so super excited to wear my lehenga again!! hope it fits!)

Both the times I saw really nice lehenga's and really cheap! (i.e. cheap in terms of bridal wear)

A bride was trying this on, it doesnt really show much in the picture but it was super pretty. She is getting it made in tomato red for her wedding day.

The price of the Lehenga is Rs. 48,000 and I have seen similar ones selling at Rs. 70,000/- ! Infact the store owner claims people take it from him on wholesale and add their own MRP and sell at higher price in fancier showrooms.

He needs atleast a month or more to make the lehenga, and it can be customized in any way. Lehenga available are both traditional as well as modern styles, leaning a bit more on the traditional look.

What you wont find there are designer duplicates and cocktail lehenga's.

I have a lot of Saree's from this place, again cheaper than the normal market rate and yet similar quality.

Saw this originally in Net but got it re-made in Georgette.

This is in heavy Kundan work, If you like swaroski and stones then you'll get a lot of stuff there.

My SIL saw this in blue or I think green, then got it re-made in red, It has pearl plus stones.

How to reach there?
It is NOT Chabra 555, its only Chhabra

Locate Zohra Emporium at Karol Bagh, cross the road and take the opposite lane in, Just before Roshan's take a right into the small lane, look toward your left near a jewelry shop there will be a sign pointing Chabra upstairs ( its on the 1st floor) or just ask someone once to reach Roshans.

Karva Chauth Special: Tanishq's perfect app!

A few day ago my mother-in-law comes up to me and says"Acha beta Baya kay liye humarey yaha mathis raktey hai, teek hai, apni mummy ko bata dena"

"baya?!" I wondered.

My mother-in-law spends the next 15 minutes trying to explain how there have to be 6 glasses with mathis on top and a jug full of rice along with 2.5 clothes.

Now my MIL is extremely sweet and shy, she hates asking for anything, so by the end of it all I am super confused of what I have to give and what I have to get. Its decided in the end, that my mom and my mother-in-law will discuss it among themselves. *phew* problem solved!

It wasn't until I downloaded the Tanishq app that I really figured out what baya or Baayna really is.

Me and my mom are HUGE Tanishq fan, My bridal sets for all my wedding functions are from Tanishq so I know what the company stands for, and when I heard they had this Karva Chauth app I just had to check it out!

I won't say the app has every single ritual listed on it, that will be just to many. But what it does have is a great synopsis of rituals, little things that people expect you to know.

I have to go home for my first Karva Chauth, when my mom heard about it she started to freak "I cant watch you not eat or drink, dont come here" My mom is worried that the moon will be too late, now I can tell her what exact time it will be out, the app has a great moon time forecast for most major cities in India, AND it has a countdown till the moon rises!! Mine reads 4days, 6hours and 51mins till the Karva Chauth moon rise.

This picture was obviously taken yesterday :P
There is a fun side to the app too, it has a chalni. When you put that on, your phone camera acts as one. Also, your husband can download the app, put a gift for you on the moon, the app then sends you a message and you can go retrieve your gift by putting in your birthday and a pin code sent in the message.

Note to self : Must download app to husbands phone!

All in all, I love the app, download it and let me know if you like it??

Download it on your Android phone from Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.techjini.karvachauth&hl=en

PS: What are you wearing at Karva Chauth? I am wearing my wedding lehenga.

Check out the wedding files to see some of the Tanishq Jewelry I wore http://www.crazyindianwedding.com/2013/06/wedding-files.html

Karva Chauth Story

Festive seasons here and to all of us who got married within a year its our first Karva Chauth! So to those who don't know the story behind Karva Chauth here it is :

Long Long time ago....

It was Veeravati's first Karva Chauth, she was the youngest in seven brothers and one sister, she came to her mother's house to stay for the festival. (Like us newly weds will go)

Her mother-in-law affectionately sent sargai for her. She put mehndi on her hands along with her mother and bhabhi's and did sargai in the morning before sunrise and kept her fast.

By the evening the brothers got worried that how can their little sister live without food and water till night. They consulted among themselves and decided that they will create artificial moon for their sister.

Two brothers went to the forest and burnt a diya, and covered it with a Channi to create an image of the moon. The other brothers went home and said let's go sister the moon has risen. All her bhabhis kept quite. Sister said "let's go Bhabhi the moon has risen, lets worship the moon and offer ark (water offered to the moon). All the Bhabhi said "So early only your moon could have risen, You go." and they laughed and ignored her.

She did not understand. She hurriedly took the pooja material to the terrace, from distance she thought that the moon had risen.

She offered her worship and ark to the moon.

She sat down post the pooja to eat, when she took the first bite a hair appeared, (I forgot what happened in the second bite) and when she took the third bite a messenger came running from her sasural  that her husband has become seriously ill. By the time she reached her in-laws her husband had died.

Doctors were called but nobody could understand the sudden death. Then the family enquired from priests and Astrologers. They told them that this has happened because the girl has eaten, after seeing the artificial moon.

Now the only solution is that the girl must keep next year karwa chauth. Then her husband will be well and will live long.

Next year Karwa chauth arrived, her mother sent sargai for her. As per the tradition, she did sargai and kept fast. Her mother also sent material for baya, karwa and money.

In the evening, all married ladies dressed up wore chunari, making preparation for the pooja, she waited to exchange karwa with Gaur Maata.

When the first Gaur Maata arrived. The girl held her feet and pleaded her
" O'Gaur Maata, Please exchange karwa with me."
After lot of pleading Gaur Maata sat with her and said
"Sister of seven brothers karwa le",
"Jo bhukhi naa reh sake (who can't stay hungry) karwa le",
"Jo payasi naa reh sake (who can't stay thirsty) karwa le",
"Jo Chalni meh chaand dakhe (One who see moon in sieve) karwa le."
She begged her again and again to say "Le Suhaagan Karwa Le" Gaur Maata said, "I won't say this. My other sisters will come, you make them say." And after saying this, she went away.

After some time 2nd Gaur Maata came and she also went away saying what the earlier one had said. In this way they came one by one when the ninth Gaur Maara came, the girl was worried. When she begged her again and again and held her feet, then Gaur Maata said," when my youngest sister will come, you ask her , I will not say. My sister is scary looking but good at heart, don't let her go, make her say it."

After some time 10th Gaur maata came. She had dark complexion, had big teeth, horrible face and was wearing lot of jewelry. When she heard the small girl pleadings, she sat down with her to exchange karwa and like other Gaur Maata's said
"Sister of seven brothers karwa le",
"Jo bhukhi naa reh sake (who can't stay hungry) karwa le",
"Jo payasi naa reh sake (who can't stay thirsty) karwa le",
"Jo Chalni meh chaand dakhe (One who see moon in sieve) karwa le."

The girl fell on her feet and said "O' Mother please forgive my mistakes, Please say "Le suhaagan karwa le". If you will say this , my husband will live. I will always worship you. Please bless me.

On girls repeated pleading, Gaur Maata felt pity for her and said-Let it be so and said "Le suhaagan karwa le" and the girl said "de suhaagan karwa de". Then, the same thing was repeated by both of them in reverse order. When they said this ten times Girls husband was well again. Everybody touched Gaur Maata's feet"

The Newly Wed's Guide to dressing for Karva Chauth.

$

My first Karva Chauth is coming up on Tuesday, and I am excited to wear my wedding lehenga again! I really hope it fits, there has been a lot of weight gain post wedding :(

My mom called up yesterday saying I need to get my Nosepin and Mang tikka too. I realized dressing up for Karva Chauth is almost like dressing up for your wedding. There are so many things you must have.

I am packing to go over to my mothers place, so here is the list of things:

1. Wedding Lehenga: Confused if you should wear it or something simpler?! Wear the lehenga! Its one of the few times you get to wear it. Wearing it the whole day would ofcourse be too tiresome so I would probably wear something light during the day and change into my lehenga near pooja time.

2. Nose Pin and Mang tikka : I guess this depends family to family, I have to wear it, dont know if all new brides have to ? Does anyone know?

3. Necklace and Earrings : Well you should complete the look, shouldn't you!?

4. Chudi or Chuda : Depending upon if your punjabi or not do wear your complete chuda or glass Chudiya, its for 'shagun'.

I wanted to get a chuda for Karva Chauth, my family isn't punjabi so I wore glass bangles which are 'shub' for us and I thought I will wear a chuda just for a different look for a while starting on karva chauth; but when I went to the market and tried it on, I dropped the idea. Punjabi girls how do you wear them for so long!!??? The whole thing is like an armor you cant move your hand at all!

So I am sticking to my glass bangles which I can atleast take off at the end of the day..

5. Payal and Bichua : A mark of a married women, infact I and a lot of girls wear them though out their life post wedding. If you dont then do wear them for Karva Chauth.

I am planning to wear my janjar's, then ones I wore at my wedding. They are huge and start hurting after a bit but I love them! :D

6. Sindoor and Bindi : I don't think I need to elaborate why on this!

7. Hair and Makeup : A lot of families have big huge gathering so obviously as a newly wed you must look pretty and perfect. Keep your hair loose and relaxed opposite to what you had on your wedding day and a more 'you' makeup. It will probably be just me and my mom at our pooja so I will do something totally minimal on my own.

Havn't done makeup on your own ever?! Read this old post on easy makeup tips : http://www.crazyindianwedding.com/2013/10/dummy-guide-to-makeup-for-bride-to-be.html

8. Mehendi : A must! I remember once my mom didn't have time to get mehendi done and I was in Mumbai so my brother helped put mehendi on my mothers hand, yes there was a mehendi smiley on her hand, but it was mehendi nonetheless.

Got mine done at South Extention Part 2, Mehendi wala said it will take half and hour, it took 2 hours! The result is good though, really 'barik' and has come out dark.

Got a little done on my feet as well..

9. Add on's : Go all out, its the only day of the year you can get to be a 'bride' again, specially if its your first Karva Chauth! Rings, armbands, kamarband, etc, etc, nothing is too much :)

10.Camera : You'r getting dressed in your prettiest! make sure you take plenty of pictures!

I love how the new Tanishq and the Azva ads shows a new image of the bride, the real image of the bride.

I absolutely love the chubby cheeks of the Azva bride.

When you see the ad it makes you want to go 'googly-woogly-wush'. The background setting is an old tree, which looks stunning and innovative. (me wants that on my destination wedding on our 5th anniversary)

As for the Tanishq Bride, blogs and e-news have gone dusky-crazy. I honestly didn't notice that the bride was 'dusky', what I did notice was the amazing pink-ish lehenga she had on, with a matching beautiful neck piece (that I want!); and who could miss that cute child that wants to go round-and-round with her mom and new daddy. Kudos for making re-marriage look as special, it is certainly a step towards acceptance in the rigid society.

Dear Bride-to-be,

Congratulations! You are on one of life's most amazing journeys. Waking up every morning visualizing how your wedding day will be, getting tensed if your lehenga would come out just perfect, if the MUA would deliver like she promised, will the mehendi-wali be on time!? and then getting goosebumps when you get that 'goodmorning' message from your fiance, yes you have someone you can call that, fiance...are you used to it?
Been saying, "Hi, have you meet my fiance?" Blushing anyone? Smiling for sure! Well don't get too used to it, very soon you are going to have to learn to say "Have you meet my husband?"

November means wedding month for a lot of girls, so what do you do when the D-day is approaching?! Its a difficult mind set to be in, you are so excited to have the best day of your life and so scared that something might ruin it. You can't wait to be with the 'one', and you want just a few more months at your home, YOUR home, the home you grew up in. On the other side there is a complete new world waiting for you.

Darling girl, you have given your heart and soul into creating the perfect wedding day and I can promise you it will be nothing less. I can also promise you there will be big bloopers that you will remember for the rest of your life; which at that point will not feel like a huge blunder, just something to laugh about.

As a November bride last year I advice you to delegate everything right now, and relax, have fun, cherish every moment with your parents, start your dance practices, dance more with your sisters than your husband (you have a life time for that), enjoy every moment of these last few weeks.

No its not the end of a life, but it is a beginning of a new you. You will change, things around you will make you change, there will be some changes that you would want and some you would have to accept. Be ready, be patient. My darling girl your entering into a new world for that you have to remember to cherish what you had.

Love,
Roli Gaur Vahsisht
Your Crazy Indian Bride

OLD POST :
Nov. 12, 2012
The month of my wedding

Update

The whole dance sequence has been trashed, updated and changed...so bye bye 2 months of practice and welcome 3 days crash course of dance.

One of my sister refuses to dance so now I have to find backups...thank god for friends!

I have just realized that I am the only one among family and extended family which has not thought of any dress to wear for the Pooja, will nick something from the trousseau.

I am not packed, havn't started, don't have a plan.....thinking of stuffing everything in a suitcase and just sending all the stuff to in-laws.

Need a good vacation, couple of days in Agra??? anyone free (mom?!)

Things are a little calm.....which is weird I thought they would be a little panicked instead, but thats good.

Other good news is that my nails are co-operating and I haven't broken them yet ( 2 glasses of milk everyday helps and switching from querty to touch phones helps). Touch wood!

I am not gaining weight (neither am I losing it).

Trousseau Destination : Biba

Yes, Biba.

I never thought I would ever write an article stating Biba as a trousseau destination, no they havnt gone all 'bridal', but their anarkali's and suits are perfect to wear at your new home, to a family dinner or a small cocktail party. For a newly wed they have come as an answer to what to wear, without being overly dressy.

I was so excited when I saw the ad stating 'Biba by Rohit Bal', Finally I could own a Rohit Bal, so I went asap to the store! :P

Unfortunately I already have an over stuffed wardrobe so I keep my price range in check, so no Rohit Bal for me yet, plus he is famous for enormous amount of flare which I wanted but it doesn't look flattering on me.

That doesn't mean I was totally disappointed, Biba also has a great range of itself. It is certainly a must check out!

I miss writing updates, I remember how I used to do it once in a few months to keep you guys updated on my wedding progress.

My Wedding Update : In double digits now!

So my brand is picking up pace but I might have to give it a halt for couple of months, November and December are both pretty busy months for me. November is too much travelling and in December I have my final semester exams for MBA (yes I will begin whining again.)

First Anniversary is coming up (!), and I have something special planned for you lot, if I can figure out the technicality of it all.

Finally decided on our 2nd honeymoon destination! Going to Bangkok and Pattaya tomorrow :D. We will be back before our actual 1st anni. date, will celebrate on the D-day with family.

I am trying to schedule posts for when I am out but since the idea just struck me I dunno if I will be able to...*fingers crossed*

So many things happened over the last month! Its easier to talk about them all via pictures.

Karva Chauth

Went home day before karva chauth in a red saree all decked up, only to tell my mom that I am wearing my chudidar below the saree so I can change into a kurta immediately, which eventually I didn't.

Next day morning got up at 4am, washed my face, brushed and staggered down the stairs to eat 'sargi'. My mother doesn't do Sargi so I had no idea what to do, after a lot of instructions the day before I managed to do it alright. (I guess). Eat and drank water as much as I possibly could in the whee hours of the morning (read not much).

Finally went back to sleep at 5. Got up a few hours later and got dressed really slowly. Wore an Anarkali during the day to keep things simple.

Spent the rest of the day with mom, both of us just lying on the sofa's and watching T.V., Put mehendi on mom's hand :D

Look at the squibbles.

I was pretty ok through out the day, not hungry or thirsty, but after the twitter conversation with Mehak of Peaches and Blush and Thedelhibride about "Are you thirsty?" I started to feel my throat drying off.

Decided to just take a LOT of time dressing up to distract myself. So did the whole 16 Shingar! My hair decided to misbehave that day :/ so pictures havn't come out that good.

After Pooja, I became a little impatient, according to the Tanishq App the moon rise was scheduled at 8:20pm, but because of so much pollution we finally saw it at 8:45pm. The whole day went smoothly but the last half an hour was just unbearable!.

Finally the moon came out, both me and my mom broke our fast.

In between I had an Exhibition.

The above two events prompted me to realize my pictures are coming too bad! I am going from chubby to more-than-chubby. So me and my husband started dieting the days that followed, but we took a break on Diwali and Bhai Dhooj.

Diwali

Wore a lehenga from Roli Gaur Vashisht on Diwali, Spent the morning making Rangoli and the afternoon clicking pictures :D

In the studio...

Decorated the studio a bit.

Everything was going pretty good and my 1st Diwali at my new home was being spent with so much love and fun, but once we started the pooja my tears won't stop flowing. I was missing home, even when I was away while studying, I was always back for Diwali. This was the first time in my life that I won't hear Dad sing the arti's in a loud voice, probably making up for no pooja the rest of the year ;) , neither would I get to know if bhaiya started singing the verse in fast forward just to make the pooja shorter or if mom made the Saurti perfectly.

When my husband found out, he got his keys and we were off to visit my parents :D. I did get to meet them and also my bestest friends parents who were celebrating Diwali without her. Came back after an hour and bursted a LOT of crackers. I usually don't but it was my first Diwali, na!

Bhai Dooj

Break from Dieting :D

Saree from Roli Gaur Vashisht :D

All in all the festive season was great and it has just started!!

As for our diet, in 21days hubby's lost 5kg and I have lost 3.5kg!
But we are off to celebrate our anniversary wonder how much we will gain :O

You have received a Gift.

I used to have perfect skin in terms of tanning, it would be slightly tanned over the summers and even that would go away naturally as winter approached.

Now, my skin is bored of being in a similar color palette through out the year! Any time I go out anywhere I get tanned in all different shades!

Remember my fight with tanning post South Africa and Goa, Read here  http://www.crazyindianwedding.com/2013/07/my-fight-with-tanning-using-home.html

Well, we are back from Bangkok and Pattaya and my skin has changed colors again! Even our families are now confused, because, even if we go out anywhere in a group its just me and my husband who come back in a new tanned look and nobody else.

Thailand, Day 1 and Day 6

Every time the type of tanning is also different! South Africa was more undertone-changing-tan (read the above mentioned article), Goa was all over Indian tanned and Thailand is patchy tanned (yucky).

I am a bit guilty of not using sunscreen all the time but even if people who are with us don't they don't get as tanned as we do :/

Wedding seasons here and I want my skin back.

Help?

PS: A few days back I went to the market for like 10 min I was wearing a suit and my chunni was hanging in the normal way, like it makes a U-shape in the front. When I came back I noticed my hands got a little tanned and you could actually see the untanned skin making a circular pattern of the chunni! *facepalm*
